Character Information:
Name: Stuart Bayldon
Canon: Sirens
Canon Point: 01x06 - "Cry."
Age: 33

Type of Character: Canon - CRAU from Scorched
Reference: Sirens @ Wikipedia

Setting Concepts: Sirens is designed to be as close to real life as possible, and emulate real life situations. There isn't much change between canon and real life apart from fictionalised organisations.

NHS: The UK National Health Service provides free healthcare and Ambulance transport to residents of the United Kingdom who pay National Insurance and taxes in order to maintain it. The functions of the NHS are split into regional "trusts", who maintain hospitals, ambulances and other services.

West Riding Ambulance Service - NHS Foundation Trust: The West Riding Ambulance Service provides Emergency Ambulance services to the city of Leeds and it's hospitals. West Riding employs many people, from EMTs and Paramedics to admin staff and counselors.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT): An EMT is the standard on-the-road ambulance crew-member employed by West Riding. They have access to a number of emergency life-saving techniques and equipment, but are not allowed to prescribe drugs, intubate airways, or perform more invasive techniques, such as cardiac massage. Stuart and his crewmates are an EMT-grade crew.

Paramedic: A Paramedic is someone who holds a registration, similar to a doctor or nurse, and is able to employ more life-stabilising techniques, such as drugs, administered via IV, and other invasive techniques. A team leader is often a Paramedic, such as Stella Woodvine, Stuart's team leader.

Personality: The best way to describe Stuart Bayldon is "prickly fuck-wit." This is a term coined by his best friend Ashley Greenwick, and is the best way to describe his outward personality. Stuart dislikes social situations, and often comes across as acerbic, sarcastic and with a superior, know-it-all attitude.

This isn't all there is to him, however. Stuart has an intimacy problem which, according to his friend Maxine, stems from the fact his father left him. It takes Stuart a while to actually open up and say what's really on his mind. This is shown in the first episode, when, after insulting Maxine, it takes him 24 hours to go and apologise and explain why he did what he did.

Stuart keeps mostly to himself. He's very defensive about his innermost feelings, likely due to the intimacy issue. When he's with Rachid and Ashley, he's a wise-cracking, snarky, sarcastic bastard. He rarely shows his inner feelings, and that's only to Maxine and, on occasion, Ashley, as these are the people he trusts more than anything.

He shows a severe dislike for anyone who tries to understand how he's feeling. Psychiatrists seem to be the top of this. He has a strong dislike of Kirsty Schelmerdine, the hospital's shrink, and constantly tries to prove her wrong in her assumptions about this. The key point was when Stuart intentionally suppressed the effects of "Up, Horny, Down."

Professionally, Stuart is incredibly confident in his own abilities. He knows exactly what to do in dire situations, when time is of the essence, or equipment is denied. He shows great decision-making skills and is shown to be a born leader solely by knowledge.

He has a strong sense of pride. When Rachid attempts to become the "alpha male" of the crew, Stuart fights back with a vehement passion to defend his position and succeeds. He has strong determination, and dislikes being proved wrong. He will fight his opinion to the death.

He can't cry. He feels an emotional detachment to everything, and is of the opinion that death is simply a part of life.

In summary, on the outside, Stuart is hard to get along with, hard to deal with and dislikes social interaction. On the inside, however, you can see how much of his exterior is to protect the real personality from being hurt too much. Only his true friends see this side.

While not being qualified, he can perform complicated emergency proceedures such as open cardiac massage. He's a skilled Ambulance Technician, and very knowledgeable about his chosen field.

Third Person: The Mist was a dangerous thing. Everyone in Anatole knew that. Yet, some people felt the compulsion to just... wander into it.

That's exactly what happened to Stuart Bayldon. If asked why he did such a stupid and dangerous thing, he wouldn't have an answer. He woke up one day, got dressed in his greens, grabbed the trauma backpack from the clinic and just... set off walking. Deeper and deeper into the Mist, and the further he got, the more the effects punched through the fog of the compulsion that brought him here.

It started with the hallucinations. Hearing voices of people he knew, both in Anatole and back home. Shadows, things. Some ran away, others ran towards him, causing him to flinch and close his eyes... and, yet, he was strangely calm. Another effect of this much Mist. The further he went, the more exhausted he became. He started seeing things that were a bit more convincing; the open back of an ambulance, Maxine's kitchen.

Stuart knew they were just hallucinations, that the Mist was playing on his mind. He likes to think he's above being able to be tricked by mere images... but something about all of this was real. He couldn't shake the feeling fully... So, he pressed on, trying to ignore it.

...And then it started. The effects only felt in the deeper levels of the Mist surrounding Anatole. It started off as a fever, and then got slowly worse. A burning sensation across his skin, spreading like fire over his whole body. Stuart had to stop, the all-encompassing fog making him feel claustrophobic. His chest heaves as he panics, and then he coughs, pulling his hand away, seeing it stained with blood.

Wiping a hand across the corner of his mouth, he noticies more blood. His vision starts to swim and he falls to his knees. He can feel his nose start to bleed, and liquid forming in his tear-ducts that's staining his vision red.

He passes out, face down on the ground, the Mist flowing over his unconscious form.

Network: Well, this is another bloody shitstorm, isn't it?

[Have an incredibly sour-sounding, annoyed voice coming over the consoles. It shows a man dressed in green, flecks of red still on his face, despite cleaning up at the Welcome Center.]

So, apparently, I've went from the hell-city of mist to the back of a giant turtle. Forgive me if I'm not entirely convinced this isn't a product of my imagination brought to life by someone fucking around with magic again.

Yes. It's happened. Yes. It's fucking annoying. If it is that, please stop. If it's the Mist, well, I guess I just have to wait this fuckery out.

[A pause, then a heavy sigh.]

I've also been advised to speak to a doctor. Seems bleeding from the eyes, nose and mouth isn't "normal". Obviously.

[He folds his arms]

I don't think I need to tell you that I feel fine, although I will need a pair of gloves and if someone has an asthma inhaler knocking around, Salbutamol... a blue one, that'd be great.

Additional Information - CRAU Characters:
Game Origin: Scorched

CRAU Changes: One of the biggest changes is in Stuart's physiology. He was physically changed in order to withstand the Mist surrounding Anatole. To quote Scorched's player guide: a Scorched's physiology has been changed by the Mist in order to allow him or her to survive contact with its energy. and There is, however, one universal effect: the Scorched are ageless. For a character over the age of 30, their aging becomes fixed at their current place. If a character is under the age of 30, their age will become fixed at any point between 18 and 30, player's choice.

There was a mechanic which allowed someone to give a character powers, change, or modify existing ones and suchlike. I gave Stuart abilities beyond what his universe would allow. His powers are two-fold. The first one will be the ability to sense when people he's close to are in trouble. If this sense is ignored, it starts to manifest as a headache that gets more intense the longer he ignores it, and how dire the situation is. It doesn't tell him who's in trouble, but it does, at least, not go off every time they lose their keys.

...Only sometimes.

The second is, if a person is feeling stressed, direct skin contact will cause a surge of adrenaline in Stuart, and cause him to experience the body's natural reaction to adrenaline, which Stuart eloquently puts as...

Essentially, Stuart will experience a euphoric period, lasting approximately 4-8 hours, the "up," a period of increased sexual need, the "horny," and a period of depression, the "down." Stuart, however, is a self, and foolishly-taught, master at repressing these feelings, but if it constantly happens, it may overwhelm even him.

Answer the following questions in no less than 300 words but no greater than 1000 words put together...

Character's background (their past and present): Stuart's history up to his canon point is relatively simple. The earliest point is when he was a child, and he and his friend were playing William Tell. Stuart ended up impaled to a garage door by a crossbow bolt. Obviously, the emergency services were called, and Stuart was attended to by a paramedic called "Marvin." Stuart describes this as a pivotal moment in his history, and it is likely what caused him to join the ambulance service.

Shortly after, his father, Dennis Bayldon, left Stuart and his mother. All Stuart can remember is being sat down and told how it wasn't going to work with him and Stuart's mother, and that he was sorry. The last time Stuart saw his father was when he walked out the door.

At some point, Stuart went to University and met Maxine Fox. The two became friends and stayed that way after graduation. After that, Maxine joined the police force and Stuart joined the Ambulance Service. After a while, he was also paired up with Ashley Greenwick.

Stuart has known Ashley for over two years, and considers him one of his closer friends, along with Maxine. Soon, the pair were joined by a trainee Ambulance Tech called Rachid Mansaur, who soon became a part of "Stuart's crew."

During the time Rachid was on Stuart's team, he performed an open cardiac massage on a patient, and proved his semi-competance at dealing with adrenaline surges and post-traumatic stress, and also revealed that he was impotent. After an experience with a university student who had an affair with another man, he discovered that his virility wasn't as low as he wanted as a result of being exposed to another man's semen.

He also has Maxine loaded as his I.C.E (In Case of Emergency) contact in his mobile phone, after going with her to a party for her work.

As Rachid got more comfortable with the other two, he eventually grew restless. He started to compete with Stuart for the postition as "Alpha Male" of the crew. Stuart, however, successfully proved that brains are sometimes better than brawn.

When Maxine hooked up with Craig, a fireman, she came to Stuart with some small issues she was having. Because she was so unused to being in a solid relationship, and with the stress of the Detective Inspector course looming, she was unsure of her relationship with Craig, and it was having a knock-on effect on her job confidence. Stuart helped persuade her and Craig otherwise.

Not long after this, Stuart discovered that his dad had died. After being estranged for so long, he found out that his dad had re-married and had another son, also called Stuart. He doesn't really know how to feel about this and decides to bond with his new-found baby brother, with disasterous results. He finally admitted to Maxine that he loved her, by kissing her, on little Stuart's advice.

After this, Stuart gets a box of his dad's possessions from his new step-mother, discovering a VHS tape. Unable to watch it, he doesn't go to attend his dad's funeral the following day, instead going to work as usual, but takes the VHS tape with him.

Are you bringing your character to [community profile] ten_fwd from another game? If you are, which game?: [community profile] scorched (Currently closed.)

If you answered yes above, briefly summarize how they were changed by and what challenges they faced in the climate of their previous game(s): During his stay in Anatole, he joined the Clinic as an emergency responder, but mostly spent his time locked up and away from people. This was mostly due to his Scorched power, which was if he came in contact with anyone feeling stressed, he'd receive an adrenaline surge, and then the accompanied comedown of, what Stuart calls, "Up, horny, down." Euphoria, increased sex drive, then a bout of depression. Stuart professes a sheer hatred for this process, so staying away from people made sense to him.

Aside from his colleagues at the clinic, Martha Jones and Nymphadora Tonks, Stuart didn't really interact with many people because of this.

He'll probably be back to his canon self more than affected by what happened in Anatole. Stuart will take any trauma earned in Anatole in his stride. He's not open about his feelings, so anything that happened may be buried deep inside unless something forces him to talk about it. He'll also have a new-found appreciation for people, considering he wasn't surrounded by the general public in Anatole. His bedside manner will still leave much to be desired, but he won't be so critical of others.

Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them? Playing here will open Stuart up a lot more, I think. He'll likely join Sickbay to help out as much as he can.

Prior to accepting the offer to join the settlement, Stuart was trapped in a city called Anatole. Things were fine, at first, he had one of his only friends, Ashley, with him, and quickly made a few more. Soon after, Ashley disappeared, and Stuart took the loss hard, retreating into the Mists for more than half a year.

If asked, Stuart wouldn't know what had happened, whether he went home, or not.

He'll be a bit more open and less despondant now that the APS has said that he can potentially go home once he serves a minimum of six months. He'll probably be back to his canon self more than affected by what happened in Anatole. Stuart will take any trauma earned in Anatole in his stride. He's not open about his feelings, so anything that happened may be buried deep inside unless something forces him to talk about it.

Does your character have any close ties to existing canon characters? N/A

Why do you think your character would work in this setting? Are you kidding? Stuart jumped at the chance to work six months in some backwater settlement and have the chance to go home. He accepted Eli's offer immediately.

As for his suitability, Stuart's medical knowledge will be a plus to the game. Nowhere can have enough medics, after all. He's good in a crisis, able to think under pressure. Due to the nature of his job in his home universe, he is used to situations that involve blood and other bodily fluids, and is in no way squeamish. He's good at dealing with high emotion and stressful situations and, despite his acerbic and blunt personality, is good at calming people down and getting them medical attention as soon as possible.

As backwater as this place seems, it's a lot better than the fucking Victorian Smoke Machine factory.

[Stuart is leaning back in his chair, smug grin on his face.]

I get to go home in six months. This is bloody brilliant. The one time I actually feel happy about being in another fucking dimension. These APS people really know how to make a bloke smile. Now...

[Game face.]

I think we've got to have a little talk about your pub selection. There's not enough lagers or... you know? Real beer. Because labelling stuff as "German" or "Irish" doesn't exactly tell me what's up there. Especially when you name "Miller" as a beer. Please. That's a soft drink at best.

You've really got to sort your selection out. Seriously.
fuckinghateadrenaline: (Default)
THIRD PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: Stuart counts to thirty, his hands in the traditional CPR pose over a young man's bare chest, performing compressions. This was bloody ridiculous. They were at the local pool. A call had come in, Category A; Young male unresponsive after being dragged from the pool. Seems he'd taken a dive into the shallow end, cracked his head on the floor of the pool and stunned himself. By the time the lifeguards got off their fat arses, dragged him out and called 999, he'd drank half the pool and had stopped breathing by the time Stuart, Ashley and Rachid had got there.

Tilting his patient's head back, and closing off his nose, Stuart breathes into the man twice, before starting his compressions again. CPR was always worth a try, after all, but this was the young idiot's own fault. Why do humans have to be so stupid to think they need to do this to impress people. We're not peacocks, fanning our tail-feathers to attract a mate. Humans are more evolved than this!

Mid-way through his second set of compressions, the kid coughs, bringing up a gallon of pool water. At least he's alive, likely with a concussion and probably chlorine in his system after that much pool water. Stuart rocks back on his haunches to give him some room, before snapping his fingers to get the kid's attention.

"Okay, we're going to take you to A&E. We've notified your parents." That's Rachid's job, as he motions for Ashley to bring over the stretcher. "You've likely got a bad concussion, but things will stop spinning soon, okay?" A nod from the patient there. "Good. Now hold still, we'll get you sorted out."

None of his trademark sarcasm on this one. Not for another example of human stupidity...

Stuart's history up to his canon point is relatively simple.

Unable to watch it, he doesn't go to attend his dad's funeral the following day, instead going to work as usual, but takes the VHS tape with him.

personality: The best way to describe Stuart Bayldon is "prickly fuck-wit." This is a term coined by his best friend Ashley Greenwick, and is the best way to describe his outward personality.

Only his true friends see this side.

why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting? Stuart's medical knowledge will be a plus to the game.

Writing Samples

Network Post Sample: Sample 1. Sample 2. More can be provided on request if these are not adequate enough.

Third Person Sample: Stuart counts to thirty, his hands in the traditional CPR pose over a young man's bare chest, performing compressions.
